Elk Grove, California, installs LED streetlights from BetaLED in first installation

The city of Elk Grove, California, completed its first installation of LED streetlights in October 2011. The project was approved by the Elk Grove city council in April 2011. The program involved both the purchase and installation of energy efficient streetlight fixtures and funding sources included the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, municipal funds, and utility rebates. The EECBG award was for $166,442 and total project costs were $210,530.

Brundidge, Alabama, to use $81,000 grant to purchase LED streetlights

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) recently approved federal funding for additional LED streetlight installations in the city of Brundidge, Alabama. Previously, a federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award, issued in 2010, was used to purchase and install 104 cobrahead streetlight fixtures and 34 decorative LED streetlight fixtures. Subsequently, the city received a second EECBG award, valued at $69,950, which will be combined with city funds of $11,531. The combined funds will be used to purchase approximately 100 LED fixtures for the city’s second phase of energy efficient streetlight installations.

Kerman, California, to install 718 LED streetlights in city-wide replacement program

The city of Kerman, California, expects to launch a full scale replacement of all city-owned streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures before the end of 2011. The city’s streetlight conversion efforts will be funded by an award of $72,000 from US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and a $202,000 low interest loan from the California Energy Commission (CEC). The combined funds will enable the city of Kerman to replace all 718 city-owned streetlights with the energy efficient LED fixtures.

Robertsdale, Alabama, plans to purchase 120 LED streetlights

Robertsdale, Alabama, was recently awarded a grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA), which will be used toward the city’s first deployment of energy efficient streetlighting. The award is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The city of Robertsdale intends to purchase and install approximately 120 LED streetlight fixtures using the $90,000 grant.

Rossford, Ohio, issues RFP for decorative LED streetlights

Funded by an award from the US Department of Energy, the city of Rossford, Ohio, seeks proposals as the first step in the city’s initial LED streetlight installation. The city of Rossford received a grant totaling $210,474 for energy efficient projects, which include efforts involving LED streetlights, traffic and pedestrian signal heads and school zone flashers. The grant is provided through an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) and is locally administered by the Ohio Department of Development. A portion of the EECBG grant will be used to purchase and install eleven new LED streetlights and poles.

Dublin, Ohio, plans to purchase 1,500 LED streetlights in 2012

Following a successful pilot installation of LED streetlights, the city of Dublin, Ohio, is planning for a full replacement of all 1,500 city streetlights with LED fixtures. The pilot program included the installation and evaluation of fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting/Cree of Sturtevant, Wisconsin, and Kim Lighting of City of Industry, California. The LED fixtures were installed on Coffman Road during a three month trial period. Fixtures were evaluated for performance and input was solicited from citizens. According to city officials, citizen response was overwhelmingly positive.

Seguin, Texas, issues RFP for 70 LED streetlights

The city of Seguin, Texas, has issued a request for proposals in preparation for deployment of its first installation of LED streetlights on the city’s roadways. The city received an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) allocation, for small cities and counties, totaling $86,365. The EECBG funds are managed and distributed locally by the Texas State Energy Conservation Office (SECO). The goal of the program is to serve as a pilot to evaluate LED streetlighting technology and determine the best use and application of the energy efficient fixtures. Approximately 70 LED streetlight fixtures will be installed in this initial phase.

Ceres, Burlingame, Kerman and Salinas, California, to install over 4,000 LED streetlights

The California Energy Commission (CEC) recently approved nearly $2 million in low interest loans for streetlighting improvements in four California cities. The CEC loans are funded by bonds and stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The fund, Energy Conservation Assistance Act (ECAA), was created to provide low-interest loans to local governments and other organizations for energy efficiency and energy-producing projects. The four cities receiving CEC loans are Ceres, Burlingame, Kerman and Salinas.

Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, installs LED streetlights for Philips Hadco and seeks solution for decorative streetlight retrofit

A planned installation of 70 LED streetlights is the first deployment of energy efficient streetlighting for the village of Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. The LED streetlights will be used to replace existing traditional cobrahead roadway lights. The project is funded through the village general fund is expected to cost approximately $24,360. The village, in cooperation with Dobbs Ferry, New York, purchased LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by Philips Hadco, of Littlestown, Pennsylvania.

Ceres, California, to use CEC loan to purchase 2,200 BetaLED streetlights

The city council of Ceres, California, appoved the use of a low interest loan from the California Energy Commission (CEC) for the purchase of LED streetlight fixtures earlier this week. The loan will allow the city of Ceres to convert all city-owned streetlights to LED streetlight fixtures. Funds totaling $1.193 million will be used to purchase and install over two thousand LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting/Cree of Sturtevant, Wisconsin.

Maui, Hawaii, evaluates changes to ordinance to accommodate LED streetlights

A change to an ordinance allowing LED streetlighting on the island of Maui, Hawaii, is under consideration by the County Council. Existing ordinances only permit high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights on island roadways due to sensitive animal species as well as dark sky compliance for observatories. Before any change to the county ordinance occurs, the County Council will need to evaluate the existing ordinances and establish guidelines for new lighting technology.

Sausalito, California, plans to install 276 new LED streetlights

Using general capital project funds of $118,820, the city council of Sausalito, California, has authorized the department of public works to begin planning and implementing the city’s first major LED streetlight installation. City officials determined that using capital funds would help the city realize immediate savings from energy use reduction. According to the department of public works, the city will replace approximately 276 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) and mercury vapor streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by Leotek Electronics of Milpitas, California.  In addition to the HPS and mercury vapor streetlights, the city also owns about 190 incandescent streetlights which are also targeted for future replacement.

Petaluma, California, plans to install 130 LED streetlights


The city council of Petaluma, California, recently granted final approval to a planned LED streetlight replacement project.

Petaluma plans to replace approximately 130 streetlights. The project will be funded by a grant from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and is valued at $115,954. Although the city has not actively tested LED streetlight technology in pilots, recently amended city code requires new planned developments to install the energy efficient roadway fixtures.

Nova Scotia Power seeks to identify interested vendors for LED streetlight project involving 25,000 fixtures

Nova Scotia Power, Inc. (NSPI), an electric utility providing power to the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, is in the process of evaluating suppliers of LED streetlights for a planned installation. Recent legislation stipulates that all of the province’s existing roadway streetlights be converted to LED streetlights with the implementation period for the streetlight conversion to take place over a five year period. Nova Scotia Power owns and maintains about 120,000 streetlights throughout the province.

Lompoc, California, city council approves rate for LED streetlights


The city council of Lompoc, California, has adopted a new electric utility rate schedule for the city’s LED streetlights following staff recommendations to make a rate change.

Previously, the city of Lompoc only had had rates reflecting the use of high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures. The new rate schedule reflects the lower energy consumption of LED streetlights and provides a competitive rate structure for the energy efficient fixtures.

Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities plans to issue an RFP for its member communities

Funded by grant awards from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, communities throughout the state of Iowa are beginning the conversion of existing streetlights to the energy efficient solid state technology of LEDs. Iowa communities received grants of $1.8 million which were to be used to implement energy efficient streetlighting. These federal grants are locally administered by Iowa Office of Energy Independence.  The majority of grant recipients are communities which are also municipal utilities. These municipal utilities are represented by the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU).

Asheville, North Carolina, plans installation of 2,800 LED streetlights from BetaLED in November 2011


In November, the city of Asheville, North Carolina, will initiate  Phase II of its ambitious plan to replace all existing city streetlights with energy efficient LED streetlight fixtures.

The plan was developed by city officials to drive energy savings and align with long-term municipal environmental goals of reducing the city’s carbon footprint. Over 700 LED fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting of Racine, Wisconsin, have been installed on city roadways. Approximately 2,800 BetaLED fixtures will be installed in Phase II of the program, which is slated to begin in November 2011. The third phase is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2012, followed by a fourth and final phase. The city’s streetlight installation program is facilitated through Progress Energy, the city’s energy provider.

Rohnert Park, California, receives approval for new LED streetlight installation

The City Council of Rohnert Park, California, recently approved a recommendation from the Department of Public Works to move forward with a planned project for additional LED streetlight installations. The project will be funded by a $75,000 grant from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. A portion of the award was used to purchase and install LED fixtures manufactured by Cooper Lighting and streetlight poles placed in four city parks. The remaining funds will be used to purchase and install up to 30 new LED streetlights for the city’s roadways.

Wrangell, Alaska, issues invitation to bid for GE Evolve LED streetlights after evaluating lights from different vendors



The city and borough of Wrangell, Alaska, recently completed a test installation of LED streetlights in anticipation of a city-wide streetlight replacement project. City crews installed LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, GE, Leotek and Lighting Science Group and evaluated fixture function, performance and appearance. As a result of the pilot program, the electrical department chose the GE Evolve LED streetlight fixture as having the best design and performance that best matched to the municipality’s needs. The proposed 312 streetlight installation is funded by combined grants of $146,000 from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program.

Hailey, Idaho, issues RFP for 69 energy efficient streetlight fixtures


The city of Hailey, Idaho, seeks bids for a project requiring 69 energy efficient streetlight fixtures. 

Hailey received federal funding from the US Department of Environmental Protection (EPA) for projects focused on energy efficiency and renewable resources. The Haily Community Climate Challenge was organized to showcase how a small community can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and expand on existing initiatives to reduce energy consumption. The entire program was funded through a grant of $472,429, a portion of which has been designated for energy efficient streetlights. The project’s budget includes the purchase and installation of up to 70 new energy efficient streetlight fixtures.

Asheville, North Carolina, seeks bids for 2,913 LED streetlights

The city of Asheville, North Carolina has re-issued a Request for Formal Bids and Proposals for the purchase of 2,793 new LED streetlights. Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, seeks to pre-qualify LED streetlights for upcoming retrofit


Based on a recommendation from the city’s Environmental Advisory Committee, the city of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, is actively pursuing a city-wide retrofit of all existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights. The retrofit to LED technology will also include a streetlight monitoring system. According to a statement by Mississauga’s streetlighting coordinator, Eric Menezes, a city-wide retrofit will take approximately seven years and will result in energy and maintenance savings of about C$50 million.

The city is in the process of pre-qualifying LED streetlight fixtures through a Request for Pre-Qualification (RFPQ) procurement. The procurement seeks to pre-qualify selected manufacturers products based on general criteria.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa, seeks bids for LED streetlights

The city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has issued a solicitation of bids for the city’s first LED streetlight installation. The energy efficient technology will help the city achieve its goals of reducing costs and energy consumption. The city has already successfully converted traffic signals to LED technology resulting in significant savings. The current solicitation seeks bids to supply 66 LED streetlight fixtures to replace existing 250 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights on the city’s roadways. The project is funded by a $37,896 grant from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The EECBG grant is locally administered by the Iowa Office of Energy Independence.

Illuminating Engineering Society approves TM-21 standard to predict lumen maintenance of LEDs

The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) of North America recently approved TM-21, an industry standard for determining lumen maintenance prediction.

Predicting the true life of an LED lamp continues to be one of the significant challenges faced by potential customers of the energy efficient technology. Currently, most prospective LED fixture customers rely on LM-79 and LM-80 data to evaluate potential products. These data provide an industry standard for lumen maintenance for SSL systems and LED components.

Cody, Wyoming, issues RFP for 20 LED streetlights from BetaLED

Following a successful installation of LED streetlights, the city of Cody, Wyoming, is continuing its initiative to install energy efficient streetlighting on city roadways. The latest installation is scheduled for a new construction project on West Strip which involves 20 new streetlights. Bid documents specify streetlights from BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting of Racine, Wisconsin, to maintain consistency with the city’s previous installations. In addition to the LED fixtures, the bid also includes specifications for light poles, arms, electronics and wiring.

Melrose, Massachusetts, installs Osram Sylvania LED streetlights to meet city’s energy savings goals

A pilot effort focused on the installation of LED streetlights is now underway in the city of Melrose, Massachusetts. The the state of Massachusetts Green Community Program mandates that the city reduce energy consumption by 20 percent within the next five years. City officials feel that deployment of LED streetlights is one of the best methods to achieve that goal. The city will install approximately 80 new decorative LED streetlights on downtown Main Street. The LED streetlight fixtures are manufactured by Osram Sylvania of Danvers, Massachusetts, and will replace existing metal halide fixtures.

Greenville, South Carolina, to test LED streetlights from Hubbell Lighting and GE


The city of Greenville, South Carolina, has launched the state’s first energy efficient LED streetlight program. Greenville, in cooperation with GE Lighting, Hubbell Lighting, and Duke Energy, has installed four different styles of pedestrian fixtures on one city block and is in the process of installing cobrahead style fixtures. The pedestrian fixtures were supplied by Hubbell Lighting of Greenville, South Carolina, and the cobrahead fixtures will be provided by GE Lighting, which is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, and operates a facility in Greenville, South Carolina.

Island of Hawai’i to install 1,000 LED streetlights and investigates use of smart controls


The city council of the island of Hawai’i has passed an ordinance that permits the installation of LED streetlighting in signalized intersections and crosswalks on city and county roadways. The first phase project involves the installation of approximately 1,000 new LED fixtures, approximately 200 more fixtures than the original conversion plans for 800 streetlights.

Winfield, Kansas, plans for city-wide LED streetlight project by testing fixtures from Cooper Lighting

As an initial step toward the long-term goal of replacing all of the city’s high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with energy efficient LED fixtures, the city of Winfield, Kansas, recently installed twelve new LED streetlights.

Winfield is testing energy efficient LED fixtures manufactured by Cooper Lighting of Peachtree City, Georgia. The recent installation on the downtown block of Main Street is part of the city’s ongoing initiative to reduce energy consumption and increase energy cost savings. City crews replaced existing 400 watt HPS streetlights with 127 watt equivalent LED cobrahead fixtures.

Yuba City, California, plans $1.35 million program to install 3,300 LED streetlights

Yuba City, California, will soon seek bidders for a large scale deployment of LED streetlights. By using a low interest loan of $1,345,487 from the California Energy Commission (CEC), Yuba City will be able to perform a city-wide conversion of its existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights to energy efficient LED fixtures. Final approval of the CEC financing and the streetlight replacement project from the municipality’s city council is pending. Upon city council approval, city officials expect the loan to be executed in September 2011. Initial city plans are to use the CEC loan to replace approximately 3,300 existing streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures.

North Carolina State University solicits bids for LED area lights


The Centennial campus of the North Carolina State University (NCSU) is continuing its program to convert campus lighting to LED technology. In early July, the university, located in Raleigh, North Carolina, issued a Request for Quotations (RFQ) for the purchase of LED area fixtures to be installed around the Engineering III building. The new LED fixtures will replace existing high intensity discharge (HID) area lights. This installation is funded by a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Oakley, California, awards LED streetlight project to Pacific Gas and Electric


The city of Oakley, California, recently awarded an LED streetlight project to Pacific Gas and Electric. The initiative is funded by an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG).

Following guidelines issued by the California Energy Commission (CEC), city officials determined that the project required a competitive bid, and as a result, the project was awarded to the low bidder, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). A total of five bids were submitted for the $168,314 project.

Seattle, Washington, seeks LED streetlight vendor and issues Invitation to Bid


The city of Seattle, Washington, seeks a vendor for 70 watt LED streetlight fixtures and has issued an Invitation to Bid for the city’s upcoming streetlight installation project.

The city has previously indicated that it plans to deploy up to 10,000 LED fixtures. In early 2011, the city pre-qualified LED fixtures after a formal submission and review process managed by Seattle City Light, the city’s municipal utility.

Newport Beach, California, prepares for second LED streetlight installation

The city of Newport Beach, California, recently completed the first phase of a large-scale LED streetlight installation and is preparing to begin the second phase of the program. The initiative’s first phase included installation of approximately two hundred new LED streetlight fixtures on city streets and the Balboa and Newport Piers. Application specific LED fixtures, including those manufactured by Philips and GE, were installed in the different areas. In residential neighborhoods, the city chose to install decorative post top and cobrahead fixtures, whereas shoebox style LED fixtures were chosen for the two piers. All LED streetlight fixtures replaced existing incandescent and high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights.

Alberta, Canada, municipalities to install over 300 LED streetlight fixtures from BetaLED

Communities in the Canadian province of Alberta will be lit with LED streetlights as a result of a partnership of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) and energy provider FortisAlberta. The towns of Stony Plain, Innisfail and Okotoks will receive a distribution of approximately 300 LED streetlights which will be installed as replacements for existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlight fixtures. The LED fixtures chosen for the installation are manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting, of Racine, Wisconsin, and funding for the project comes directly from FortisAlberta.

San Carlos, California, to install LED streetlights from BetaLED in $124,092 initiative

The city council of San Carlos, California, recently approved the installation of the city’s first major installation of LED streetlights. Pasadena, California, approves LED streetlight program using LEDtronics fixtures

The city council of Pasadena, California, recently approved a project for the installation of new post-top LED streetlights on city streets. The project is part of an ongoing capital improvement project for the city of Pasadena and specifically targets neighborhoods with no existing mid-block lighting. Originally, the project was scheduled to begin in early 2011, however, the scope of work was revised to include additional neighborhoods and to increase the size of the installation. The fixture chosen for the installation is manufactured by LEDtronics of Torrance, California.

Millbrae, California, installs 278 BetaLED streetlights

The city of Millbrae, California, recently completed its first significant installation of LED streetlights. The project, funded by a $112,630 grant from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, was completed in Spring 2011. The LED fixture chosen by public works officials is manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting of Racine, Wisconsin. The city of Monticello, Minnesota, is in the process of testing LED streetlight technology on city streets as part of an energy conservation effort. Madison, Alabama, re-issues RFP for decorative LED streetlights

The city of Madison, Alabama recently rejected all bids which were solicited for a twenty-five decorative LED streetlight installation. According to city officials, all submitted bids were unreasonably high and were therefore considered unacceptable by the city of Madison evaluation committee. The city is seeking bids to supply and install twenty-five Holophane decorative LED streetlights, and for the removal and disposal of existing area lights in the Madison Public Library parking lot and in the Public Works parking lot. Although the bid specifies Holophane LED fixtures, bidders may submit bids for equivalent LED fixtures.

The city of Torrington, Connecticut seeks bidders for an LED streetlight installation project. The city of Lompoc, California seeks bidders for a $95,000 LED streetlight installation project.

Using federal funds totaling $95,000, the city plans to install approximately 100 new energy efficient LED streetlights in the city’s residential areas near Highway 1. The city council of Santa Ana, California recently approved a department of public works recommendation to replace existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures. Southern California Edison adds LED streetlights to Schedule LS-1


In early May, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) passed a resolution related to LED streetlights, and municipalities in Southern California Edison’s service area will benefit from the new policy.

Previously, only city-owned streetlight fixtures in Southern California Edison (SCE) service areas were eligible for conversion to LED technology. The new resolution makes a limited number of utility-owned streetlight fixtures eligible for conversion to LED streetlight fixtures.

Ventura, California, uses $339,000 EECBG award to install LED streetlights


The city council of the city of Ventura, California, has approved a department of public works recommendation to purchase and install 500 LED streetlights. The council authorized the purchase and installation of LED streetlights manufactured by Leotek Electronics, of Milpitas, California. The LED cobrahead fixtures will replace existing, city-owned high pressure sodium (HPS) cobrahead streetlights. Madison, Alabama, issues RFP for decorative LED streetlight fixtures


Following multiple successful pilot installations of LED streetlights, the city of Madison, Alabama, is deploying an additional installation in spring 2011. The project is funded by an award from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The city’s first installation of cobrahead and decorative LED fixtures was also funded by the EECBG award. For the proposed project, the city of Madison plans to install approximately 25 decorative LED streetlight fixtures.

Hayward, California, prepares to install LED streetlight fixtures

The city of Hayward, California, recently completed a qualification of bidders for the city’s upcoming LED streetlight project. According to city officials, installation of new LED streetlight fixtures is already underway, and the city is looking to purchase an additional 62 fixtures for a proposed installation on Tennyson Road. The Request for Qualifications (RFQ), which closed on April 13, 2011, specified LED fixtures manufactured by Leotek, of Milpitas, California, however equivalent fixtures were also considered.

Ouray, Colorado, converts all city streetlights to BetaLED fixtures


The city of Ouray, Colorado, has already seen financial benefits of converting city streetlights to LED technology. Ouray’s effort to adopt new technology was driven by the simple need to replace aging streetlights as well as the desire to replace outdated mercury vapor lighting technology. The city, in partnership with local utilities San Miguel Power and Tri-State Power, financed the conversion of 100 streetlights in commercial and residential areas. City officials chose LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting, of Racine, Wisconsin.

Santa Monica, California, issues RFP for 500 LED streetlights


Following a small pilot program to test energy efficient streetlights, the city of Santa Monica, California, has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for approximately 500 LED streetlights.

Santa Monica plans to deploy the LED streetlights by the beginning of July 2011. The city of intends to install approximately five hundred new LED streetlight fixtures on residential streets and on the Santa Monica pier. The project is funded by a $668,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award from the US Department of Energy.

Aberdeen, Maryland, issues RFP for purchase and installation of Philips Hanover Lantern LED streetlights


The city of Aberdeen, Maryland, has initiated its first energy efficient streetlight project. The proposed installation includes the purchase and installation of twenty nine decorative LED streetlight fixtures which will be installed on city-owned property and will replace existing utility owned fixtures. The program is in alignment with State of Maryland energy efficiency goals.

The city was awarded $80,000 from a formula based grant which was funded by the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. A portion of this award will be used to purchase and install the new LED streetlight fixtures.

San Francisco, California, issues RFP for 19,800 LED streetlights equipped with wireless monitoring and control systems


The city and county of San Francisco, California, has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the purchase of 19,800 LED streetlight fixtures equipped with wireless monitoring and control systems. Goals of the LED streetlight program are to reduce energy consumption and reduce labor costs due to the longer life of LED fixtures. Napa, California, installs 148 LED streetlights with $100,000 EECBG award

The city of Napa, California, recently completed a first phase installation of energy efficient LED streetlight fixtures along three city streets. The installation, which was funded by an award from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and city matching funds, replaced existing high pressure sodium cobrahead streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures. Stevens Point, Wisconsin, installs BetaLED streetlights and issues RFP specifying Philips Hadco fixtures for deployment’s next phase


The city of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, recently completed an installation of new LED streetlight fixtures on the city’s roadways. The city replaced 331 existing 250 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting of Racine, Wisconsin. City officials selected principal arterial, minor arterial and collector roadways for the new streetlights. The project was completed in February 2011.

Lake Charles, Louisiana, plans second installation of decorative LED streetlights


Led by the Lake Charles Downtown Development Authority Board, the city installed decorative fixtures, and both citizens and municipal officials evaluated and compared LED and metal halide technology. In addition to new streetlights, the Ryan Streetscape project has a “street calming” component which involves reducing the downtown thoroughfare to two lanes, widening sidewalks and improving pedestrian traffic flow. The city plans to install about one hundred new decorative fixtures in the downtown area of Lake Charles. The new fixtures will be owned and maintained by the city.

Tucson, Arizona, installs LED streetlights from BetaLED and Cooper Lighting


The city of Tucson, Arizona recently completed a federally funded LED streetlight project which involved the installation of 850 new LED streetlight fixtures.

Tucson used a $425,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) from the U.S. Department of Energy to fund the project. The funds were used to purchase and install the energy efficient LED fixtures in Tucson neighborhoods with aging low pressure sodium (LPS) fixtures. The total project included 562 LED fixtures manufactured by Cooper Lighting of Peachtree City, Georgia, and 284 LED fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting of Racine, Wisconsin.

Cottonwood Heights, Utah, issues RFP for LED streetlights


The city of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, seeks bidders for a LED streetlight installation project.

Using federal funds totaling $147,800, the city plans to install approximately twenty one new energy efficient LED streetlights in the Cottonwood Heights commercial district and arterial roadways. The planned construction includes LED streetlight fixtures as well as poles and electrical wiring. The city was awarded funds through the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, however engineer’s estimates value the project at between $226,500 and $277,500.

Ventura, California, issues RFP for 500 LED streetlights


Ventura, California, will use federal funds to install 500 LED streetlights.

Ventura was awarded $339,000 from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program for an energy efficient streetlight replacement project. The city, which seeks bids for the project, plans to use the award to purchase approximately five hundred new LED streetlight fixtures on existing poles. Installation of the fixtures is not included in the bid request. The energy efficient LED fixtures will replace existing 200 watt and 250 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights at the city’s intersections with traffic signals.

Lincoln, California, to use $171,000 EECBG grant for LED streetlights

Lincoln, California, plans to install about 235 energy efficient LED streetlights using federal funds.

The Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program award of $171,000 will fund the purchase and installation of approximately two hundred and thirty five new LED streetlights which will replace existing streetlight fixtures. Watertown, Massachusetts, to spend nearly $175,000 on LED streetlights

Watertown, Massachusetts, is the recipient of a Green Community grant from the state of Massachusetts, and a portion of the grant will be spent on LED streetlight fixtures. The grant award is part of a $3.6 million program funded by the state for green and energy efficient community initiatives. Watertown received $193,000, most of which has been allocated for the purchase and installation of LED streetlights throughout the town’s neighborhoods. The city’s initial plans are to spend the majority of the funds on approximately 100 LED streetlight fixtures, though installation of some parking lot and park lights is likely to be a part of the project.

Piedmont, California, plans to install 88 LED streetlights in a small, pilot-style initiative. US Department of Energy to release draft performance specs for LED roadway lighting

To aid municipalities considering LED streetlights, a consortium formed by the US Department of Energy plans to release a draft LED streetlight specification.

The U.S. Department of Energy created the Municipal Solid State Street Lighting Consortium as part of its market-based programs. The purpose of this organization is to share technical information and experiences related to LED streetlighting and also serve as an objective resource for evaluating new products. Municipalities, utilities and energy efficiency organizations are eligible for membership in the consortium.

Asheville, North Carolina, to purchase up to 900 LED streetlights with EECBG funds

As part of a city-wide initiative to increase energy efficiency, the city council of Asheville, North Carolina, approved a resolution to purchase up to 900 new LED street light fixtures. Funding for the project is from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and totals $290,000. Because the city is in a regulated utility market, the purchase of LED fixtures must be through energy provider, Progress Energy.

Greenfield, Indiana, installs 1,500 GE LED streetlight fixtures


Greenfield, Indiana, a municipality that is an Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) community, has purchased 1,500 new LED streetlight fixtures for its first major installation of energy efficient streetlighting. IMPA was awarded $5 million in funds from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The funding for LED streetlighting projects was distributed among the twenty IMPA member communities. San Leandro, California, to install 270 LED streetlight fixtures from BetaLED


The city of San Leandro, California, has completed a competitive bidding process and is prepared to launch its first large scale LED streetlight installation. The city received funds totaling $83,320 from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The EECBG awards are locally administered by the California Energy Commission (CEC). San Leandro is also participating in the Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) energy efficient streetlight rebate program.

Ann Arbor, Michigan, to purchase 500 LED streetlights from Lumecon


The City Council of Ann Arbor, Michigan, approved the purchase of 500 cobra head LED streetlight fixtures from manufacturer Lumecon for installation on the city’s arterial roadways. The $315,968 LED streetlight project represents the third phase of a long-term LED streetlight deployment program in Ann Arbor. The installation process is expected to take six to eight months, and city officials anticipate 50% to 70% cost savings resulting from reduced energy consumption and decreased maintenance requirements. Using funding from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, the city of Mobile, Alabama, plans to implement its first major installation of energy efficient LED streetlights. Sandy, City, Utah, issues RFP for LED streetlight fixtures from BetaLED

Sandy City, Utah, is preparing for the third phase of a multi-phase LED streetlight installation program. The city has already completed two LED streetlight installations as part of a road improvement project. The first installation involved 233 streetlight fixtures from BetaLED, of Racine, Wisconsin, and the second installation involved 105 BetaLED streetlight fixtures. The third phase, which also calls for BetaLED fixtures, requires 38 new LED streetlights. The U.S. Department of Energy has published detailed reports of outdoor LED lighting in the eleventh round of testing conducted by the Commercially Available LED Product Evaluation and Reporting (CALiPER) program. The Round 11 report makes available specific test results performed by CALiPER and features a side-by-side comparison of selected manufacturers’ claims and actual CALiPER test results. Some of the test results include correlated color temperature (CCT), color rendering index (CRI), and luminous efficacy.

Island of Hawai’i plans 800 LED streetlight project

After recent passage of a county council bill, the island of Hawai’i plans to initiate a large scale LED streetlight installation in selected areas. The installation involves replacement of approximately 800 existing streetlight fixtures in the vicinity of signal intersections and marked crosswalks in Hilo, Waimea, and Kailua Kona. The project is funded by a $500,000 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant. County officials also hope to gain access to additional funding in the form of rebates from the state, if funds are available.

Rochester, Minnesota, plans $225,000 LED streetlight installation


The city of Rochester, Minnesota, is poised to initiate a significant LED streetlight installation project on city roadways. The proposed project is intended to replace up to 300 to 400 existing 175 watt mercury vapor streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures. The project is funded by an award of $180,000 from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program combined with a 20% funding match from the municipal utility, Rochester Public Utility (RPU). RPU has budgeted a total of approximately $225,000 in funds for the purchase and installation of the new LED streetlights.

Modesto, California, issues RFP for 730 LED streetlights

The city of Modesto, California, has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for the city’s first large scale LED streetlight upgrade initiative. Funding for the project comes from an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG), an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) program administered by the U.S. Department of Energy. EECBG funding for the city of Modesto was $460,000, although engineers’ estimates indicate that the project is valued at approximately $369,875.

Indiana Municipal Power Agency issues RFP for 500+ decorative LED fixtures


The Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA), a wholesale electricity provider to 53 cities and towns in the State of Indiana, issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) on February 3, 2011 for the purchase of 503 LED Kits to retrofit existing decorative streetlights. The RFP states that over five hundred existing high pressure sodium, mercury vapor style fixtures will be replaced in this project. The project will be implemented by IMPA member communities.

Santa Cruz, California, installs 125 BetaLED fixtures using EECBG award; additional installations planned


The city of Santa Cruz, California, recently completed the first of what it hopes will be a series of LED streetlight installations. The LED streetlights were deployed after city officials conducted research, solicited recommendations and performed photometric testing of existing fixtures. Funded by a $113,000 grant from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, the project involved the purchase and installation of 125 LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, of Racine, Wisconsin.

Fremont, California, uses EECBG award for LED streetlight installations

The first of two LED streetlight installation projects is now underway in Fremont, California. The initial project, which is part of a larger roadway widening program, includes the installation of approximately 50 LED streetlight fixtures on Osgood Road. The second project, which is proposed for Stevenson Road, will replace approximately 260 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED fixtures. Both projects are funded by the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program.

San Jacinto, California, receives $151,000 EECBG award for LED streetlights

The city of San Jacinto, California, is in the initial stages of planning for the city’s first LED streetlight installation. The project will target existing city-owned cobrahead streetlights and will mostly likely be implemented in some of the community’s older neighborhoods. San Jacinto was awarded $151,000 from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The goal of the project, if implemented, is to replace approximately 200 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlight fixtures with LED fixtures.

Switching 52 million US street and highway lights to LED fixtures would have saved 20.2 terawatt hours in 2010


A recently published study has quantified opportunities and potential energy savings estimates relevant to the LED streetlight sector.

According to the study, “Energy Savings Estimates of Light Emitting Diodes in Niche Applications,” the estimated installed base of roadway lights in the United States in 2010 included 26.5 million street lighting lamps and 26.1 million highway lighting lamps, resulting in a total of 52.6 million roadway lighting lamps.

Fairbanks, Alaska, plans to install 1,000 additional LED streetlights

Following the completion of a large scale LED streetlight installation, the city of Fairbanks, Alaska, is already contemplating its next project. The city has installed about 1,600 new LED streetlight fixtures on Fairbanks roadways and in the city of North Pole and will continue to install LED fixtures during 2011. City officials are planning to install another 1,000 LED streetlight fixtures in a new project. This second phase project has a target start date of late 2011 or early 2012.

Lawrence, Kansas, to use $209,000 EECBG award for LED streetlights


The city of Lawrence, Kansas, plans to install LED streetlights in its downtown areas using money awarded by a federal grant program. City officials plan to upgrade existing, decorative streetlights in downtown Lawrence with LED fixtures. The project’s funding comes from a $209,000 award from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The installation of up to one hundred LED streetlights will be located primarily on Massachusetts Street with a few fixtures installed on New Hampshire Street.
