Ann Arbor, Michigan, invites bids for $218,000 LED streetlight program

Ann Arbor, Michigan, a leader in the deployment of LED streetlights, is soliciting bids to replace 250 high pressure sodium fixtures with LED streetlights. The Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth which funds Michigan LED Demonstration Grants, in the city of Ann Arbor, Michigan, was recently awarded $218,712.

San Ramon, CA, to seek bids for LED streetlights worth $215,000

The city of San Ramon, California, is preparing to solicit bids for the installation of 349 LED streetlights along selected roadways within city limits. The Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award of $215,600 will be used to fund the project along with utility rebates from Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). The award will be used to replace all existing city owned and maintained high pressure sodium (HPS) cobra head streetlights along San Ramon Valley Blvd and Alcosta Blvd. A partial replacement of streetlights will take place on Bollinger Canyon Rd. between Canyon Lakes Dr. and Dougherty Rd.

Two Iowa cities get $350,000 for LED streetlights

The suburban Iowa cities of Urbandale and Ankeny will be regional leaders in the implementation of LED streetlight technology. With funds awarded from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, these two cities plan on converting over 400 existing streetlights to LED fixtures.

Currently there are no LED streetlights in the Des Moines, Iowa, metropolitan area.

Fallon, NV, plans $650,000 LED streetlight project

Fallon, Nevada, is set to launch a city-wide LED streetlight replacement project using $650,000 in funds from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. Fallon is preparing a large scale project which will include project design, procurement and installation of 640 LED streetlights. Alaska & Minnesota experts: LED streetlights perform well during heavy snowfall

Contrary to the concerns raised by recent reports in the general media, LED streetlights have performed well during extreme cold and heavy snowfall in both Alaska and Minnesota.
Recent winter storms throughout the United States have caused some to worry about the effects of heavy snowfall on LED streetlights. General media coverage has raised concerns about snow accumulation resulting in reduced lumen output and in some cases total fixture failure.

Naperville LED streetlight pilot shows almost 60% energy savings

San Francisco plans $10MM LED streetlight project (updated)

San Francisco, California, is preparing to launch a $10 million project to install 17,600 LED streetlights. Focused on city-owned fixtures, the 18 month initiative will be funded in part by a loan from the California Energy Commission.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom established the ambitious goals for the streetlight conversion program, which will be implemented by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC).

San Francisco is currently running an LED streetlight pilot project in its Tenderloin neighborhood. The fifty-seven LED streetlight pilot is being used to test and evaluate fixtures from two manufacturers, BetaLED and LED Roadway. Induction not LED streetlights for Chula Vista, CA, $2M project

Despite LED streetlights superior performance in pilot installations, the city of Chula Vista has initiated a 4,600 streetlight replacement program using induction technology.

A $2,000,000 low interest loan from the California Energy Commission will fund the project.

Wisconsin cities receive $657,000 in LED streetlight grants

The Wisconsin cities of Waukesha and Madison have received Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant awards from the U.S. Department of Energy totaling $657,000, which will be used to deploy LED streetlights in the two cities.


The cities are currently testing LED streetlights from BetaLED, Leotek, and LSI and plan to evaluate fixtures from Neptune and U.S. Lighting, among others.
