Blue Springs, Missouri, participates in Kansas City Power and Light LED streetlight pilot

The city of Blue Springs, Missouri was recently chosen to participate in the Kansas City Power and Light (KCP&L) pilot program to evaluate LED streetlights in the utility’s service area. The additional participant communities are Gladstone, Liberty, Prairie Village and St. Joseph, all located in Missouri. The pilot installation totals 44 LED streetlights manufactured by American Lighting, Cooper, EcoFit, G.E., Howard Lighting, and Sylvania. In the city of Blue Springs, KCP&L installed four LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by American Lighting.

Columbus, Wisconsin, to install LED streetlights from BetaLED with EECBG funds


This week, the Columbus City Council announced the winning bid for an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) funded LED installation in Columbus, Wisconsin. With a bid of $259,557 for the project, GEXPRO, an electrical distributor located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was the low bidder. The total EECBG award for the project is $159,200 with the remaining $100,000 coming from local matching funds.

St. Louis, Missouri, uses $300,000 EECBG award for LED and induction streetlight pilot


The city of St. Louis, Missouri, has received a federal grant to implement a pilot installation of LED streetlights on city streets. The city received a $300,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG), from the U.S. Department of Energy. The purpose of the LED streetlight pilot is to test and evaluate the performance of the energy efficient fixtures and determine actual functionality in field conditions. In conjunction with LED fixtures, the city is also installing and testing induction technology.

Salinas, California, awaits city council approval for $691,472 LED streetlight installation


The Department of Engineering and Transportation in the city of Salinas, California, has submitted a report to the city council that recommends the approval of an energy efficient streetlight conversion project. The report specifies the use of LED streetlight fixtures as a replacement for existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights. The report is under review by the Salinas city council, and city officials expect a decision on Wednesday, December 15, 2010. The project will be funded by a grant from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, in the amount of $691,472.

Smithtown, New York, uses $1 million EECBG award to install over 1,000 BetaLED LED streetlight fixtures


The town of Smithtown, New York, located in Suffolk County on Long Island, has initiated an ambitious LED streetlight installation program, which initially involves over one thousand energy efficient streetlight fixtures. This project, considered a pilot by city officials, is funded by an award from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The award of $1 million will be used to purchase and install 1,100 LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting of Wisconsin.

Baytown, Texas, and the Texas Department of Transportation test BetaLED LED streetlights


Baytown, Texas has deployed the city’s first LED streetlight pilot in collaboration with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and LED streetlight manufacturer, BetaLED. The pilot, located on Highway 146 at the Garth Road overpass, is designed to test LED streetlight applications on interstate freeways and highways. If the performance and economics associated with the LED fixtures is found satisfactory, installations throughout the state of Texas are possible. For the pilot installation, BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting of Wisconsin, supplied six LED streetlight fixtures. The fixtures each have 240 LEDs and are 291 watt equivalent fixtures. The streetlights will be installed on three conventional highway light poles.

Washington, Indiana, installs 315 GE LED streetlights

During the first week of December, the city of Washington, Indiana, started the installation of over three hundred LED streetlights as part of a project funded by the Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA). IMPA was awarded $5 million from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program for the purchase and installation of LED streetlights for its member communities. The city of Washington is installing 315 LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by GE.

Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada deploys LED Roadway streetlights in pilot


The city of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada, has installed nine LED streetlight fixtures as part of a pilot program to test energy efficient streetlight technology. An additional 60 LED fixtures are scheduled to be installed in a concurrent pilot project. The city is also installing an adaptive control system to determine the full potential of energy savings of the LED luminaires. The pilot installation is located in downtown Port Coquitlam on Shaughnessy Street and Broadway Street and will be running through December 2010. The project is funded by Port Coquitlam in cooperation with B.C. Hydro, the local utility.

Lafayette, California, seeks bids for LED and induction streetlights


The city of Lafayette, California, seeks energy efficient lighting for its downtown business corridor. City officials are considering LED streetlights as well as induction streetlights for a deployment of decorative post-top fixtures. The city has issued two requests for proposals (RFPs) which solicit bids for the two different streetlight technologies. Tulalip Tribes of Washington install 165 LED streetlights from BetaLED


The Tulalip Tribes of Washington recently completed its first installation of LED streetlights. The project, funded by a $208,000 award from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, was the first installation of energy efficient lighting on the reservation. The installation was located in the Quil Ceda Village, the business district of the Tulalip Tribes, and was focused on replacing all reservation-owned streetlights. Public works officials selected streetlight fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting of Wisconsin.

Mill Creek, Washington, evaluates LED streetlights in pilot

The city of Mill Creek, Washington recently completed installation of a small number of LED streetlight fixtures which will allow the city to test and evaluate the performance of outdoor solid state lighting. Located in the Mill Creek Town Center, the eight decorative streetlights were manufactured by Philips Lumec. The pilot installation will be used to calculate energy consumption and test overall fixture performance. The LED streetlight fixtures replaced existing metal halide streetlights.

Waukesha, Wisconsin, to install 1,200 LED streetlights from Cooper Lighting and continues to evaluate decorative LED streetlights

The city of Waukesha, Wisconsin, awaits final delivery of over 1,000 new LED streetlight fixtures for a deployment funded by an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG). City crews will begin installing the fixtures in November 2010, and anticipate finishing by June 2011. Waukesha was awarded $657,000 from the federally funded EECBG program for LED streetlights. Following a competitive bid, city engineers chose to install the Cooper Lighting Lumarc RC LED streetlight. Eventually, the city of Waukesha will install 1,200 Cooper Lighting LED streetlights using the federal funds

Central Hudson Power approves rate tariff for new LED streetlight installations

In response to requests from municipal customers, Central Hudson Power, an electric utility in the mid-Hudson River Valley of New York, has issued a revised rate tariff for LED streetlight fixtures. The New York Public Services Commission approved the plan for the revised tariff in November 2010. Several communities in the Central Hudson Power service area have expressed an interest in installing the energy efficient streetlight technology, including Poughkeepsie, New York, which is testing LED streetlights in a pilot program.

Mountain View, Wyoming, replaces all of its streetlights with LED fixtures from Lighting Science Group

The town of Mountain View, Wyoming, recently concluded an LED streetlight installation which replaced all of the towns existing fixtures with new energy efficient streetlights. The project was funded by a $127,000 award from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. Total project costs were far below projected estimates, resulting in a partial return of the EECBG award. A total $49,490 was used for the 56 streetlight fixture installation.

Wichita Falls, Texas, publishes vendor field test report and chooses LED streetlights from GreenStar and Lighting Science Group


The city of Wichita Falls, Texas has started the process of installing of LED streetlight fixtures on the city’s roadways. Last week, crews installed 200 fixtures as part of a 1,436 LED streetlight fixture installation which is scheduled for completion in spring 2011. The project is funded by a $777,000 grant from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. Following a competitive bid, Wichita Falls transportation officials selected LED streetlight fixtures from GreenStar Products, a Texas manufacturer, and Lighting Science Group, a company based in Florida.

Lacey, Washington, installs 44 LED streetlights from GE Lighting


The city of Lacey, Washington, has initiated the process of testing and evaluating LED streetlight technology. The city has installed 44 LED streetlights manufactured by GE Lighting. The 200 watt equivalent fixtures are mounted at a height of 30 feet. The city of Lacey previously deployed a small test installation of GE LED streetlight fixtures on a shared use trail. The larger project was funded by a grant from the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board.

Allentown, Pennsylvania, installs 53 LED streetlights from Cooper Lighting and GE


The city of Allentown, Pennsylvania, has installed fifty three LED streetlights in a pilot program to test and evaluate solid state lighting technology. The project is funded by the local energy supplier, PPL Electric Utilities. The city of Allentown is currently working with PPL Electric Utilities on a revised tariff to reflect the reduced energy consumption of LED streetlights. The utility is awaiting approval of the tariff from the state regulatory board.

La Grange, North Carolina, to spend $194,445 on LED streetlights

The North Carolina Energy Office (NCEO) recently announced local awards of federal stimulus funds for energy efficiency projects in North Carolina. The town of La Grange, North Carolina, received $155,475 from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The EECBG program is administered in North Carolina by the NCEO. The EECBG award will be used to purchase and install approximately 345 LED streetlights in the town of La Grange. Town officials expect total project cost to be about $194,445.

The city of Rapid City, South Dakota, has installed 70 energy efficient streetlights in a pilot project. Los Angeles continues to set example for municipalities and drive LED streetlight industry standards


Now in its fifth year of installing and evaluating LED streetlights on city roadways, Los Angeles, California, continues to lead municipalities and establish precedents for the outdoor solid state lighting sector.

Crews from the Bureau of Street Lighting of the city of Los Angeles installed the first LED fixtures in 2006 to test and evaluate emerging, solid state lighting technology. The success of the initial deployment led department officials to pursue broader deployment of LED streetlights to counter rising energy costs, address ongoing budgetary challenges, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The city has also partnered with the Clinton Climate Initiative as part of its LED streetlight planning efforts. The Bureau has established a five year plan with the goal of installing 20,000 fixtures in 2010 and thirty thousand fixtures annually in the following four years. The city of Los Angeles has already exceeded its plan for 2010 by installing almost 30,000 LED streetlight fixtures.

Salt Lake City, Utah, to install 1,370 LED streetlights from Lighting Science Group


The city of Salt Lake City, Utah, is preparing to implement its first, large scale LED streetlight installation project. The city is using $850,000 of funds from an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award from the U.S. Department of Energy to purchase 1,370 LED streetlight fixtures. Following a competitive bid process, the city chose the PROLIFIC LED fixtures from Lighting Science Group, a manufacturer based in Florida.

The city of Kinston, North Carolina, is prepared to launch its first large scale LED streetlight deployment. The city of Cheyenne, Wyoming, has started evaluating LED streetlight technology as the first phase of a potential energy efficient lighting project.

The city has installed six fixtures in a pilot project to assess and test the energy efficient technology and calculate potential energy and cost savings. Independent testing laboratories qualified by the US Department of Energy to benefit LED streetlight community


The CALiPER program of the U.S. Department of Energy has established a process for qualifying testing laboratories that are capable of providing accurate and comparable performance data for solid state lighting, including LM-79 reports for LED streetlight luminaires.

The LM-79 report involves test and verification of total light output, voltage, current, power, efficacy, lumen distribution, CCT, CRI, and spectral distribution of a solid state light, The report also provides information about the testing lab and equipment used to perform the tests.

Galt, California, receives $188,736 for LED streetlight project

The city of Galt, California has revised its strategy for a planned LED streetlight replacement project. In May 2010, city officials applied for grant in partnership with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), in addition to applying for a formula based grant from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. While the city did not receive the competitive grant in partnership with the SMUD, Galt did receive an award of $133,736 from the EECBG program. The city will use the EECBG funds in combination with a $55,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to fund the purchase and installation of up to three hundred LED streetlight fixtures.

The city of Oakley, California, is preparing for its first installation of LED streetlights. Marysville, California, turns off streetlights to save money and switches to LED streetlights


In a dramatic move to cut costs, the city of Marysville, California, has turned off nearly fifty percent of the city’s streetlights. This effort to save money means that streetlights in residential as well as business districts have been turned off, and it is uncertain if they will ever be returned to use. However, there are approximately six hundred operational streetlights remaining and they are slated to be replaced with new LED luminaires. The city of Marysville has been approved for a $69,804 grant from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. This grant is locally administered by the California Energy Commission (CEC). City officials hope to install up to two hundred LED streetlight fixtures under this program.

The Clinton Climate Initiative reports that street lighting may account for 159 terawatt hours of electricity use globally every year. A department within the William J. Clinton Foundation, the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) in a recent report highlights LED streetlights and induction streetlights as technologies that could reduce electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions significantly when deployed on a wide scale.

Chico, California, awarded $650,000 for LED streetlights

The city of Chico, California, is preparing to launch an LED streetlight project which will target approximately 20% of the city’s existing streetlights for replacement. Chico has received an award from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, of which $650,000 will be used to purchase and install LED streetlight fixtures. The LED luminaires will replace existing city-owned high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures located throughout the metropolitan area. City officials are working with representatives from energy supplier Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) on a full streetlight analysis and inventory.

San Ramon, California, awards $215,600 LED streetlight project to Republic ITS

The city of San Ramon, California, has awarded an LED streetlight replacement project to Republic ITS, an electrical contracting and transportation engineering firm with offices in the San Francisco Bay area. Arlington County, Virginia, to install 1,800 LED streetlights in 2010

The county of Arlington, Virginia, has started a large-scale LED streetlight replacement program funded by the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and local capital funds. The County will spend $1.5 million in 2010 to replace 1,800 existing streetlights with LED fixtures.

According to county officials, the long term goal is to replace all county owned streetlights with LED fixtures within the next six years. Currently the county owns 4,200 streetlights, most of which use high pressure sodium (HPS) technology.

San Francisco, California, issues RFP for 18,500 LED luminaires with wireless communication and monitoring system


The City and County of San Francisco has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for LED luminaires with wireless monitoring and control systems. San Francisco owns and maintains approximately 18,500 high pressure sodium (HPS) cobra head streetlight luminaires located throughout the city which will be replaced with LED streetlight luminaires. The dimmable LED luminaires must also include a wireless communication and monitoring system. Proposers will also be responsible for designing the integrated wireless monitoring and control system, and providing testing, lighting analysis, training, and web portal customization to ensure that the system works.

Wilber, Nebraska, awarded $152,681 for 150 LED streetlights

The city of Wilber, Nebraska, has been awarded funds from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program for an LED streetlight replacement project. The city of Wilber will spend $152,681 on the project, of which $122,145 are EECBG funds and $30,536 are local matching funds. Tecumseh, Nebraska, receives $186,954 for LED streetlights

The city of Tecumseh, Nebraska, has received an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award as well as local matching funds to install ninety five new LED streetlight fixtures. The EECBG award is funded by the US Department of Energy and locally administered by the Nebraska Energy Office (NEO).

The EECBG award of $149,563 will be combined with local matching funds of $37,391, for total project financing of $186,954.

Holdrege, Nebraska, has RFP for up to 855 LED Streetlights

Horldrege Nebraska has just released a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking LED streetlights to replace 165 Mercury Vapor fixtures and up to 690 High Pressure Sodium luminaires. All bids have to be in by close of business on September 17th, 2010.

Brookline, Massachusetts, testing LED Roadway streetlights in pilot program

The town of Brookline, Massachusetts is preparing to launch a pilot program to test LED streetlight technology on city streets. The city will use its Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award to purchase and install fifty new LED streetlight fixtures. The EECBG award, totaling $33,000, is funded through the US Department of Energy (DOE) and is locally administered by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.

Exeter Township, Pennsylvania, to install 470 LED streetlights

The Board of Supervisors in Exeter Township, Pennsylvania, has approved funding of $233,975 for the purchase of 470 LED streetlights to replace all existing township-owned streetlight fixtures. Next Generation Luminaires Design Competition is Open

The Next Generation Luminaires™ (NGL) Solid State Lighting (SSL) Design Competition was created to recognize and promote excellence in the design of energy-efficient LED commercial lighting luminaires. The annual competition has been running since 2008.

The 2010 Design Competition is now open for entries.

The competition is open to LED, lighting, lighting system, and luminaire manufacturers, including LED device and system manufacturers in conjunction with their luminaire manufacturing partners. There is a specific category for LED streetlights.

Please note, the 2010 NGL competition will only accept luminaires that are in or near production and ready for specification.

Nebraska City, Nebraska, awarded $83,000 for cobra head and post top LED streetlights

Nebraska City, Nebraska, has been awarded $83,081 in federal and local funds for the installation of approximately ninety-four LED streetlights. The funds are a combination of grants from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and local city matching funds. The total award of $83,081 combines $66,464 of EECBG funds and local matching funds of $16,616.

Gothenburg, Nebraska, awarded $257,600 for LED streetlight project

The city of Gothenburg, Nebraska is a confirmed recipient of an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) to be used for the installation of four hundred fifty LED streetlights. The EECBG award, funded by the US Department of Energy, is in the amount of $206,080. The city of Gothenburg is providing matching funds of $51,520. The LED streetlight deployment, which will be located primarily in Gothenburg’s residential areas, is expected to be initiated in Winter 2010.

Birmingham, United Kingdom, to start multi-year deployment of 41,000 LED streetlights in September

Birmingham, United Kingdom, will initiate an ambitious, multi-year deployment of over 41,000 LED streetlight fixtures in September 2010.

Birmingham City Council, which governs the second largest city in the United Kingdom, will oversee the installation of over 41,000 LED streetlights over the next five years. The city currently has more than 95,000 streetlights.

The city of Yakima, Washington, initiated the first phase of an LED streetlight retrofit program in July 2010. The deployment involves replacement of 459 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED fixtures. The city has initially targeted residential and business areas with high wattage HPS streetlights. The majority of the streetlights slated for replacement are 310 watt and 400 watt HPS fixtures along major arterial roadways and intersections.

Indiana Municipal Power Agency issues $5,000,000 RFP for LED streetlights

The Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) issued a $5 million LED streetlight replacement Request for Proposals (RFP) on July 30, 2010. The RFP states that approximately 7,138 existing high pressure sodium, mercury vapor, and metal halide cobra head style fixtures will be replaced using the funds. The project will be implemented among nineteen IMPA member communities.

Twenty-one Nebraska cities will spend a total of $3.8 million to deploy LED streetlights and other energy efficient street and traffic lights.

The Nebraska Energy Office announced that the cities are recipients of approximately $2.6 million in funds from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The federal stimulus funds, which are locally administered by the Nebraska Energy Office, were combined with local matching funds of roughly $1.2 million. A total of $3,828,452 will be spent on energy efficient streetlights and traffic signals.

Twenty Indiana cities receive $5 million award for LED streetlight program involving over 6,800 fixtures

The Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program has awarded $5 million to the Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) to implement a 6,811 LED streetlight program. The award will be distributed to twenty member communities throughout the IMPA network. Individual LED streetlight retrofit projects will vary in size based on the street lighting needs of each community. Member communities are cities with small populations, ranging in size from under 200 to over 15,000 inhabitants.

The city of Tanana, Alaska, has been awarded $20,000 in federal stimulus funds for energy efficiency projects. Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia, Canada, to spend C$1.8 million on LED streetlights

As part of its goal of energy efficiency and conservation, the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), Nova Scotia, has received and committed significant funding toward a large scale LED streetlight replacement project. Sources for the full C$1.8 million estimated budget are municipal funding, an award of C$918,807 from the ecoNova Scotia fund for clean air and climate change projects, and C$150,000 from Nova Scotia Power. HRM officials expect to replace 2,208 fixtures using the C$1.8 million.

Berwick, Nova Scotia, Canada, receives C$101,573 for LED streetlights

The town of Berwick, Nova Scotia, Canada, has received C$101,573 in provincial funds for the implementation of a comprehensive streetlight replacement program. The award is from ecoNova Scotia, a fund for clean air and climate change projects throughout the province. Town officials intend to replace 234 mercury vapor and high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED fixtures. This installation will complete Berwick’s conversion of its remaining streetlights. The city of West Union, Iowa, has been awarded $1,000,000 to deploy energy efficient streetlights. Loma Linda, California, awarded $123,200 for LED streetlights

The city of Loma Linda, California has been awarded $123,200 in federal stimulus funds for a citywide LED streetlight deployment project. The award is funded through the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. Loma Linda city officials plan on replacing nearly one third of the city’s high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED luminaires. Long term city goals include converting all Loma Linda streetlights to LED fixtures.

Waynetown, Indiana, receives $247,000 EECBG award for LED streetlights and traffic signals

The city of Waynetown, Indiana, has been awarded $247,000 in federal funds, which will be used to replace existing streetlights and traffic signals with LED fixtures. The grant award is from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and is administered by the Indiana Office of Energy Development (IOED). Waynetown is awaiting final approval from the IOED in order to begin the project.

Columbia City, Indiana, awarded $249,504 for LED streetlights

The city of Columbia City, Indiana, has received $249,504 to be used for an LED streetlight replacement project. The award is from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Grant (EECBG) program which is locally administered by the Indiana Office of Energy Development. Clayton, California, plans to install 95 LED streetlights as part of a pilot program to test and evaluate the energy efficient fixtures. Boise, Idaho, reallocates $764,000 of stimulus funding to deploy additional LED streetlights

A successful LED streetlight project earlier this year coupled with the need to meet federal deadlines has led the city of Boise, Idaho, to reallocate $764,000 of federal stimulus funds toward the deployment of a second phase of LED streetlights. The Department of Energy funds were originally allocated for a project at a wastewater treatment plant and a homeowners’ fund to make houses energy efficient.

Waverly, Iowa, to spend $540,000 on LED streetlights

The city of Waverly, Iowa plans to implement a $540,000 LED streetlight replacement program using a combination of funds from the federal government and its municipal utility.

Three California towns to spend $223,773 on LED streetlights

The California towns of Windsor, Cotati and Cloverdale were collectively awarded a $223,773 energy efficiency grant which the municipalities will use to replace high pressure sodium (HPS) lighting with LED streetlights. The funds were received from the U.S. Department of Energy.

The town of Windsor is serving as the lead coordinator for the project, according to Windsor senior planner, Kevin Thompson. The regional utility, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), provided assistance with the technical portion of the grant application.
