17 Michigan cities get $2 million for LED streetlight projects

Seventeen cities and counties in Michigan have been awarded approximately $2 million in federal funds to be used for LED streetlight demonstration projects. The stimulus funds are Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants (EECBG) from the US Department of Energy. The cities and counties have been allocated their awards but have not yet issued RFPs, which are likely to be issued mid-year 2010.

Over $100,000 to simulate LED streetlight programs in North Carolina

Two North Carolina cities are the recipients of federal stimulus funds awarded for energy efficiency projects. These grants, totaling over $100,000, from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program are part of the first round of funding allocated to North Carolina applicants. The funds will be used to replace 156 existing streetlights in the cities of Albemarle and Hendersonville. Albemarle has received $54,137 which will be used to retrofit 124 streetlights. Hendersonville will replace 32 existing fixtures using an energy efficiency grant of $52,200.

Independent Testing of LED Streetlights



The US Department of Energy runs Commercially Available LED Product Evaluation and Reporting (CALiPER), an independent testing program for commercially available Solid-State Lighting products.

To date only six street light products have been tested by CALiPER.

Seattle to launch $2 million LED streetlight program in Q1 2010

The City of Seattle, Washington, is close to launching the first phase of a program to replace 40,000 aging residential streetlights with LED streetlights.

The first phase will be implemented in the first quarter of 2010 and will involve 5,000 residential streetlights at a cost of $2 million. City officials are currently writing the RFP and have the goal of issuing the document in mid-February 2010.

New Jersey to get over $1.5 million in fed funds for LED streetlights

The New Jersey cities of Camden, Union City and Jersey City have received an allocation of over $1.5 million in federal stimulus funds to purchase energy efficient LED streetlights.

The funding comes from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program.

The office of US Senator Robert Menendez reported that $750,000 has been allocated to Camden, New Jersey, for the purchase and installation of energy efficient LED streetlights.
