Superior, Nebraska, installs 600 GE Evolve LED streetlights

Nearly two years ago, the city of Superior, Nebraska, embarked on an ambitious plan to replace all of the city’s streetlights with energy efficient LED fixtures. Superior’s power needs are served by a municipal utility, so city officials hoped to reduce energy consumption and increase energy savings for the community. Energy savings plans included a large-scale replacement of 600 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED roadway fixtures, funded in part by a $246,000 grant from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) and $62,000 in local funding.

Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, to install 350 LED streetlights

The town of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, will soon deploy its first installation of LED streetlights. The project will be used as a pilot study for town officials to test and evaluate energy efficient streetlighting technology in collaboration with South Carolina Electric and Gas (SCE&G). Funding of $500,000 for the purchase and installation of the LED streetlights is from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program.

Jenks, Oklahoma, issues RFP for decorative LED streetlights

The city of Jenks, Oklahoma, has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for the city’s first installation of LED streetlights. This project encompasses both street and parking lot lighting and includes 89 decorative LED streetlight fixtures, with the possibility that an additional 25 fixtures will be installed. The project is funded by a federal grant and local matching funds and has an estimated cost of $270,000.

Caltrans seeks bids for 42,000 LED streetlights

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has issued an Invitation for Bid (IFB) for the purchase of 42,000 LED streetlight luminaires. The installation of the LED streetlights will take place in four increments of approximately 10,000 fixtures each with a focus on the state’s highway system. This project is the first phase of the state of California’s long term goal to replace the high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights on the state’s highways with energy efficient solid-state lighting.

Fairbanks, Alaska, issues RFP for 800 LED streetlights

The Alaska Department of Transportation has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a large-scale deployment of LED streetlights for the cities of Fairbanks and North Pole, Alaska. The project is funded by the state Department of Transportation and Public Facilities and has an estimated value of $1.5 million.  The project involves the conversion of 800 high pressure sodium (HPS) cobrahead streetlights to LED cobrahead streetlights within the Fairbanks Metropolitan Area Transportation System (FMATS) area.

Next Generation Luminaires award program seeks LED street and roadway lighting entries in yearly competition

An award program created to recognize and promote excellence in LED commercial lighting luminaires, the 2012 Next Generation Luminaires (NGL) Outdoor Design Competition launched on June 18, 2012. NGL competition partners include the Illuminating Engineering Society, the International Association of Lighting Designers, and the US Department of Energy represented by Pacific Northwest National Laboratories. The 2012 outdoor lighting competition includes street and roadway lighting.

US Department of Energy to host workshop focused on LED streetlights in Boston

The US Department of Energy will host a workshop focused on LED streetlighting in Boston, Massachusetts, on August 2-3, 2012. The workshop is facilitated by the Municipal Solid-State Streetlighting Consortium (MSSLC) and will feature presentations, speakers, and representatives from LED streetlighting industry and the public sector which utilizes the energy efficient technology.
