California Energy Commission evaluates LED streetlight proposals valued at nearly $2 million

The California Energy Commission (CEC) is reviewing proposals, submitted by California cities and counties, for funding requests focused on LED streetlight installations. The proposals, which are evaluated on a first come, first served basis, are for a second round of Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) awards. The EECBG awards are funded by a grant from the US Department of Energy. Although funds have not been officially allocated, the state of California expects to award the grants in July 2012.

Boise, Idaho, seeks bids for Holophane and Cooper Lighting LED streetlights

The city of Boise, Idaho, seeks bids for decorative LED streetlights, and interested parties must express interest in bidding by registering with the city by 5 PM on March 19, 2012. Completed bids must be submitted by March 29, 2012.

The bid is the latest phase in a concerted effort by Boise to light its streets using energy efficient technology. The upcoming installation is part of a larger city plan to convert existing streetlight fixtures to LED technology and install LED streetlights in inadequately lit locations. The proposed project includes the purchase of about fifty-one complete historic decorative streetlight poles and decorative post-top LED fixtures.

Newberry, Florida, seeks bids for LED streetlights

The city of Newberry, Florida, seeks bidders for a small deployment of LED streetlights, which will be installed by the city’s municipal utility. The energy efficient streetlight nitiative is funded by the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and is locally administered by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Office of Energy. The EECBG award is part of nearly $19 million of formula-based grants awarded to small cities and counties in Florida. Plans for Newberry include the purchase of at least 20 LED streetlights.

Iowa communities start LED streetlight installations

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU), an organization which serves over 500 municipal utilities in Iowa, has been actively working with its member organizations to promote the implementation and use of energy efficient LED streetlights.

A significant number of IAMU member communities were recipients of federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) funds, which are locally administered by the Iowa Office of Energy Independence. To maximize purchasing power, the IAMU is assisting interested member communities in combining grant awards for the purchase of 1,154 LED streetlights.

Trenton, Michigan, selects Sylvania LED streetlight retrofits in $71,163 project

The city council of Trenton, Michigan, recently accepted the recommendation of its engineering department to purchase Sylvania LED streetlight retrofits from Raymond de Steiger, Inc. The recommendation that the city purchase $71,163 of LED streetlight fixtures followed a pilot project involving the installation of LED streetlights from several different vendors and assessment of performance in some of Trenton’s existing streetlight fixtures on West Jefferson Avenue.

Hiawatha, Iowa plans installation of 25 cobrahead LED streetlights

After completing reconstruction of North Center Point Road, city officials in Hiawatha, Iowa, have initiated plans for Hiawatha’s first LED streetlight project. The overall scope of the reconstruction effort involves three roadway lanes, sidewalks, trails and streetlighting spanning approximately one mile. Plans include the purchase and installation of about twenty-five cobrahead LED streetlights.

Riverhead, New York, issues RFP for 66 post-top LED streetlights

Riverhead, New York, has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for sixty-six LED post-top luminaires. The RFP is part of Riverhead’s first deployment of LED streetlights. The initiative aligns with the town’s goals of reducing both energy consumption and costs in the community. In late 2011, the town council assessed solid-state lighting technology and determined that when resources became available, the city’s goal would be to consider changing all of the Riverhead’s streetlights to LEDs.

DOE releases financial tool for municipal LED streetlight projects

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) sponsored Municipal Solid-State Lighting Consortium (MSSLC) released an economic planning tool for cities considering or planning the installation of LED streetlights. The Excel-based analysis tool was developed by the MSSLC in collaboration with the Clinton Climate Initiative. Municipal users can estimate the cost of purchase and installation as well as calculate the economic impact of switching existing roadway lighting to LED fixtures.

Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, issues RFP for 580 LED streetlights

To meet its long-term goal of increased energy efficiency, the city of Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, has created an initiative in which all new streetlight installations will involve LED streetlight fixtures.

The city recently completed a small pilot project located in a new subdivision. Instead of using the traditional roadway fixtures, 100 watt and 150 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights, city officials installed lower wattage LED streetlights manufactured by LED Roadway of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The current initiative involves the purchase of 580 LED streetlights which are targeted for new subdivision developments.

Robertsdale, Alabama, issues RFP for purchase of 124 LED streetlights

Tracy, California, seeks bids for 4,218 LED streetlights

The city of Tracy, California, is preparing to replace all city-owned streetlights with energy efficient LED roadway fixtures and seeks bids for a project involving 4,218 LED streetlight fixtures. The project, scheduled to begin in mid-2012, is focused on replacing over four thousand existing high pressure sodium (HPS) and mercury vapor streetlights with LED fixtures. The HPS streetlights targeted for replacement range from 70 watts to 250 watts. The mercury vapor streetlights targeted for replacement are 400 watt fixtures. Energy consumption will decrease by at least 50 percent.

Greenbelt, Maryland, issues RFP for LED streetlights

The city of Trenton, Michigan, a recipient of an Advanced Lighting Technology Demonstration Grant, has finalized plans for its first installation of LED streetlights. The energy efficient streetlight deployment is funded by a grant from the Michigan Energy Office (MEO), which was the recipient of federal funding from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The EECBG grants are locally administered by the MEO. The city of Trenton was one of six Michigan communities awarded funding for energy efficient lighting pilots. Trenton was awarded $75,410.

U.S. Department of Energy issues reports on LED roadway lighting

The U.S. Department of Energy (U.S. DOE) recently issued reports highlighting the performance of LED roadway luminaires. Two of the reports are U.S. DOE-funded GATEWAY demonstration reports. The GATEWAY program focuses on providing third-party data of solid state lighting technology in comparison with existing technologies. Additionally, the U.S. DOE also issued a report detailing the characteristics of the U.S. lighting market focused on four sectors: residential buildings, commercial buildings, industrial buildings, and outdoor, a sector that includes roadway lighting.

Jackson Township, New Jersey, plans to install up to 750 LED streetlights

Following a lengthy delay, the Township of Jackson, New Jersey, has entered into an agreement with utility provider Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) for the purchase and installation of LED streetlights. The contract agreement was approved by Jackson Township officials and representatives of JCP&L. A $464,500 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award was granted to Jackson Township in October 2009, but unexpected delays resulted in repeated postponement of the project.

California to award $10 million in EECBG funds for energy efficiency projects

The California Energy Commission (CEC) announced two funding opportunities for energy efficient projects, including LED streetlights, for California’s small cities and counties. Funds totaling $10 million will be awarded to applicants for Phase II of the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The CEC has already committed or approved $37.3 million in Phase I funds. The CEC also announced the 3% energy efficiency loan program, which can be used to finance energy efficient projects of up to $3 million in value.

Elk Grove, California, installs LED streetlights from BetaLED in first installation

The EECBG award was for $166,442 and total project costs were $210,530.

Brundidge, Alabama, to use $81,000 grant to purchase LED streetlights

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) recently approved federal funding for additional LED streetlight installations in the city of Brundidge, Alabama. Previously, a federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award, issued in 2010, was used to purchase and install 104 cobrahead streetlight fixtures and 34 decorative LED streetlight fixtures. Subsequently, the city received a second EECBG award, valued at $69,950, which will be combined with city funds of $11,531. The combined funds will be used to purchase approximately 100 LED fixtures for the city’s second phase of energy efficient streetlight installations.

Kerman, California, to install 718 LED streetlights in city-wide replacement program

Dublin, Ohio, plans to purchase 1,500 LED streetlights in 2012

Following a successful pilot installation of LED streetlights, the city of Dublin, Ohio, is planning for a full replacement of all 1,500 city streetlights with LED fixtures. The pilot program included the installation and evaluation of fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting/Cree of Sturtevant, Wisconsin, and Kim Lighting of City of Industry, California. The LED fixtures were installed on Coffman Road during a three month trial period. Fixtures were evaluated for performance and input was solicited from citizens. According to city officials, citizen response was overwhelmingly positive.

Seguin, Texas, issues RFP for 70 LED streetlights

Ceres, Burlingame, Kerman and Salinas, California, to install over 4,000 LED streetlights

The California Energy Commission (CEC) recently approved nearly $2 million in low interest loans for streetlighting improvements in four California cities. The CEC loans are funded by bonds and stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The fund, Energy Conservation Assistance Act (ECAA), was created to provide low-interest loans to local governments and other organizations for energy efficiency and energy-producing projects. The four cities receiving CEC loans are Ceres, Burlingame, Kerman and Salinas.

Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, installs LED streetlights for Philips Hadco and seeks solution for decorative streetlight retrofit

Maui, Hawaii, evaluates changes to ordinance to accommodate LED streetlights

A change to an ordinance allowing LED streetlighting on the island of Maui, Hawaii, is under consideration by the County Council. Existing ordinances only permit high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights on island roadways due to sensitive animal species as well as dark sky compliance for observatories. Before any change to the county ordinance occurs, the County Council will need to evaluate the existing ordinances and establish guidelines for new lighting technology.

Sausalito, California, plans to install 276 new LED streetlights

Using general capital project funds of $118,820, the city council of Sausalito, California, has authorized the department of public works to begin planning and implementing the city’s first major LED streetlight installation. Iowa communities received grants of $1.8 million which were to be used to implement energy efficient streetlighting. These federal grants are locally administered by Iowa Office of Energy Independence. The majority of grant recipients are communities which are also municipal utilities. These municipal utilities are represented by the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU).

Asheville, North Carolina, plans installation of 2,800 LED streetlights from BetaLED in November 2011

In November, the city of Asheville, North Carolina, will initiate Phase II of its ambitious plan to replace all existing city streetlights with energy efficient LED streetlight fixtures.

The plan was developed by city officials to drive energy savings and align with long-term municipal environmental goals of reducing the city’s carbon footprint. Over 700 LED fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting of Racine, Wisconsin, have been installed on city roadways. Approximately 2,800 BetaLED fixtures will be installed in Phase II of the program, which is slated to begin in November 2011. The third phase is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2012, followed by a fourth and final phase. The city’s streetlight installation program is facilitated through Progress Energy, the city’s energy provider.

Santa Monica, California, issues RFP for 500 LED streetlights

Following a small pilot program to test energy efficient streetlights, the city of Santa Monica, California, has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for approximately 500 LED streetlights.

Santa Monica plans to deploy the LED streetlights by the beginning of July 2011. The city of intends to install approximately five hundred new LED streetlight fixtures on residential streets and on the Santa Monica pier. The project is funded by a $668,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award from the US Department of Energy.

Aberdeen, Maryland, issues RFP for purchase and installation of Philips Hanover Lantern LED streetlights

The city of Aberdeen, Maryland, has initiated its first energy efficient streetlight project. The proposed installation includes the purchase and installation of twenty nine decorative LED streetlight fixtures which will be installed on city-owned property and will replace existing utility owned fixtures. The program is in alignment with State of Maryland energy efficiency goals.

The city was awarded $80,000 from a formula based grant which was funded by the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. A portion of this award will be used to purchase and install the new LED streetlight fixtures.

San Francisco, California, issues RFP for 19,800 LED streetlights equipped with wireless monitoring and control systems

The city and county of San Francisco, California, has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the purchase of 19,800 LED streetlight fixtures equipped with wireless monitoring and control systems. Goals of the LED streetlight program are to reduce energy consumption and reduce labor costs due to the longer life of LED fixtures. Only city-owned streetlights are currently targeted for replacement.

Napa, California, installs 148 LED streetlights with $100,000 EECBG award

The city of Napa, California, recently completed a first phase installation of energy efficient LED streetlight fixtures along three city streets. The installation, which was funded by an award from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and city matching funds, replaced existing high pressure sodium cobrahead streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures. The city of Napa received EECBG funding totaling $100,000 which was supplemented with leveraged funds of $16,930.

Stevens Point, Wisconsin, installs BetaLED streetlights and issues RFP specifying Philips Hadco fixtures for deployment’s next phase

The city of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, recently completed an installation of new LED streetlight fixtures on the city’s roadways. The city replaced 331 existing 250 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting of Racine, Wisconsin. City officials selected principal arterial, minor arterial and collector roadways for the new streetlights. The project was completed in February 2011.

Lake Charles, Louisiana, plans second installation of decorative LED streetlights

Led by the Lake Charles Downtown Development Authority Board, the city installed decorative fixtures, and both citizens and municipal officials evaluated and compared LED and metal halide technology. In addition to new streetlights, the Ryan Streetscape project has a “street calming” component which involves reducing the downtown thoroughfare to two lanes, widening sidewalks and improving pedestrian traffic flow. The city plans to install about one hundred new decorative fixtures in the downtown area of Lake Charles. The new fixtures will be owned and maintained by the city.

Tucson, Arizona, installs LED streetlights from BetaLED and Cooper Lighting

The city of Tucson, Arizona recently completed a federally funded LED streetlight project which involved the installation of 850 new LED streetlight fixtures.

Tucson used a $425,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) from the U.S. Department of Energy to fund the project. The funds were used to purchase and install the energy efficient LED fixtures in Tucson neighborhoods with aging low pressure sodium (LPS) fixtures. The total project included 562 LED fixtures manufactured by Cooper Lighting of Peachtree City, Georgia, and 284 LED fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting of Racine, Wisconsin.

Cottonwood Heights, Utah, issues RFP for LED streetlights

The city of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, seeks bidders for a LED streetlight installation project.

Using federal funds totaling $147,800, the city plans to install approximately twenty one new energy efficient LED streetlights in the Cottonwood Heights commercial district and arterial roadways. The planned construction includes LED streetlight fixtures as well as poles and electrical wiring. The city was awarded funds through the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, however engineer’s estimates value the project at between $226,500 and $277,500.

Ventura, California, issues RFP for 500 LED streetlights

Ventura, California, will use federal funds to install 500 LED streetlights.

Ventura was awarded $339,000 from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program for an energy efficient streetlight replacement project. The city, which seeks bids for the project, plans to use the award to purchase approximately five hundred new LED streetlight fixtures on existing poles. Installation of the fixtures is not included in the bid request. The energy efficient LED fixtures will replace existing 200 watt and 250 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights at the city’s intersections with traffic signals.

Lincoln, California, to use $171,000 EECBG grant for LED streetlights

Lincoln, California, plans to install about 235 energy efficient LED streetlights using federal funds.

The Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program award of $171,000 will fund the purchase and installation of approximately two hundred and thirty five new LED streetlights which will replace existing streetlight fixtures. The city will use LED roadway streetlights manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting, of Racine, Wisconsin.

Watertown, Massachusetts, to spend nearly $175,000 on LED streetlights

Watertown, Massachusetts, is the recipient of a Green Community grant from the state of Massachusetts, and a portion of the grant will be spent on LED streetlight fixtures. The grant award is part of a $3.6 million program funded by the state for green and energy efficient community initiatives. Watertown received $193,000, most of which has been allocated for the purchase and installation of LED streetlights throughout the town’s neighborhoods. The city’s initial plans are to spend the majority of the funds on approximately 100 LED streetlight fixtures, though installation of some parking lot and park lights is likely to be a part of the project.

US Department of Energy to release draft performance specs for LED roadway lighting

To aid municipalities considering LED streetlights, a consortium formed by the US Department of Energy plans to release a draft LED streetlight specification.

The U.S. Department of Energy created the Municipal Solid State Street Lighting Consortium as part of its market-based programs. The purpose of this organization is to share technical information and experiences related to LED streetlighting and also serve as an objective resource for evaluating new products. Municipalities, utilities and energy efficiency organizations are eligible for membership in the consortium.

Seattle, Washington, to evaluate new LED streetlight fixtures for future 10,000 streetlight installation

Asheville, North Carolina, to purchase up to 900 LED streetlights with EECBG funds

As part of a city-wide initiative to increase energy efficiency, the city council of Asheville, North Carolina, approved a resolution to purchase up to 900 new LED street light fixtures. Funding for the project is from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and totals $290,000. Because the city is in a regulated utility market, the purchase of LED fixtures must be through energy provider, Progress Energy.

Greenfield, Indiana, installs 1,500 GE LED streetlight fixtures

Greenfield, Indiana, a municipality that is an Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) community, has purchased 1,500 new LED streetlight fixtures for its first major installation of energy efficient streetlighting. IMPA was awarded $5 million in funds from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The funding for LED streetlighting projects was distributed among the twenty IMPA member communities. The fixture chosen for the city of Greenfield installation is GE Lighting Solution’s Evolve LED streetlight.
